architecture by children
Chad Edwards, RA, LEED AP, was one of 45 architects who spent several months mentoring local students for the 2008 Architecture by Children competition. Approximately 1,500 K-12 students in 40+ schools and home-school groups, created roughly 150 projects under the oversight of the volunteer architects who started visiting classrooms in January. The 2008 competition focused on a dwelling. Each student was allowed to choose their own client and then designed a dwelling that provided for five activities: sleeping, eating, cooking, washing and one other activity that is specific to the client as well as at least one sustainable feature.
Students worked with their teacher-architect team in the research and development of their designs creating either 2D or 3D presentations. emersion DESIGN staff assisted with the judging of projects created by the homeschoolers Chad Edwards mentored. Top projects from each class were submitted for the Exhibit and Design Competition.
