emersion DESIGN is the lead designer on the design-build team transforming the historic YMCA building into The Why, a dynamic student-centered destination at the University of Cincinnati. Reimagining this landmark campus facility, the project creates a vibrant hub that supports community, connection, creativity, and well-being while honoring the building’s rich history. Designed to foster belonging and holistic wellness, The Why will feature active social spaces, quiet areas for reflection and restoration, a student-run café, sensory rooms, and adaptable furnishings that can evolve with changing student activities. Universal accessibility, safety, and sustainability are integral to the design, reflecting the University’s commitment to equity and environmental stewardship. The Why will serve as a new heartbeat of student life at the University of Cincinnati for generations to come.
